Choosing The Right Plunge Pool Colour
May 19, 2023

Once you have made the decision to purchase a new plunge pool and you have picked the best size for your backyard and selected the location, you’ll be presented with another important decision to make: the colour of your pool shell.

One of the great things about this stage in the design process of your plunge pool is that you are truly free to make whatever choice you want. There are no constraints, design requirements, planning permissions, or other factors that may limit your shell choice when it comes to selecting the colour; you can let your creative juices flow freely to find the perfect colour to create the pool space you always dreamed of.

What to Consider When Choosing a Plunge Pool Colour

While there are no real constraints to the colour of your swimming pool like there may be to selecting your pool shell, it doesn’t hurt to have an understanding of some of the criteria that goes into picking the right colour for you.

The first thing to consider is the existing and future exterior and interior design of your backyard and home. Your swimming pool will be a central element of your backyard and it’s important to decide how you want it to play into the rest of the design and styling of your home. Do you want it to blend in seamlessly with the rest of your design or would you prefer something that stands out and becomes a feature?

Another important part of the pool shell colour selection process is how it will look and interact with the pool surroundings. Ideally, the colour of your pool shell should be a contrasting colour to the pool surroundings to create a pleasing visual balance. Lighter coloured shells will also draw more attention to the pool itself, whereas darker shells can allow the surroundings and other decking features to stand out.

It’s also worth noting that lighter colours are more likely to attract your eye to the bottom of the plunge pool showing up the inevitable dirt and debris that collects there, so if that will bother you, consider opting for a darker colour. Lighter pools are also cooler overall than darker pools as they reflect the light and heat better. These may not be significant in your decision compared to stylistic choices, but they should nonetheless factor in.

Before picking your final colour, be sure to compare samples with your other backyard and pool surround elements and in different lighting conditions. Most colours will appear differently when set against other particular colours and depending on whether they are in direct sunlight or shade.
