Fiberglass Pools vs Vinyl Lined Pools
May 19, 2023

Are you thinking about installing a swimming pool in your backyard?

In addition to the size and shape of your pool, one important consideration is the type of pool you want to install. Today’s contractors offer a number of choices when it comes to swimming pool materials, and knowing the pros and cons of each can help you make a more informed decision.

Here, we’re discussing the differences between fiberglass, and vinyl pools—from installation time to maintenance, customizability, and cost.

Fiberglass Pools

As one of the most common types available, fiberglass pools are reasonably priced and require little maintenance. With fiberglass pools, specialized shells are built in a factory from an existing mould and shipped to your property for the contractor to install. Once the pool shell arrives at your home, excavation and installation are required to get your pool in the ground. More often than not, you can have your fiberglass pool installed in about 2 weeks.

Fiberglass pools are coated with a gel that creates a non-porous surface, which prevents the growth of algae and reduces maintenance time significantly. However, this gel coat requires weekly cleaning and the application of chemical treatments to protect it, which may add to the overall maintenance time.

Vinyl Pools

Generally more affordable than fiberglass pools, vinyl pools are a good option if you’re on a budget. One of the most notable benefits of vinyl pools is their customizability—you can have them in any shape, depth, or size you want, unlike fiberglass ones.

With vinyl pools, vinyl liners are installed over a steel or polymer frame—and while this might simplify installation and get your pool ready in a shorter time, you’ll most likely have to replace the liners in 7 to 10 years, depending on how durable they are. This will add to the overall cost of the pool in the long run, and you most likely won’t see a return on investment if you decide to sell your home at a later time.

Vinyl pools also have a non-porous surface that inhibits algae growth, but they are not as durable as fiberglass ones, so caution should be exercised when using them. Installation can take anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks, though they usually come with pre-assembled components or complete pool kits that help to speed up installation.

Unlike our fiberglass pools, which are highly chemical-resistant, vinyl pools suffer the major drawback of being susceptible to significant liner damage from poor chemistry over time. Furthermore, any debris left in the pool has the potential to stain the vinyl liner is left over time, with rust stains being visible in as little as 24 hours!
