Plunge Pool Heating — What Are Your Options?
May 22, 2023

A swimming pool is a great addition to any home, but many homeowners worry that they don’t have the space required to fit a full-sized pool into their backyard. Another common concern we encounter is the cost of maintaining and running a swimming pool over the long-term. Plunge pools are the perfect answer to both these problems.

plunge pool is a smaller sized swimming pool ideally suited to relaxing and entertaining. Plunge pools are much smaller, but still have plenty of depth for swimming, and make for an ideal home-spa experience. Their smaller size makes them perfectly suited to a backyard with limited space and those who are worried about the costs of running and maintaining larger sized pools.

Plunge pools are most often used to relax rather than exercise which means keeping them heated can be even more important. Below is a rundown of the various heating options available to keep your plunge pool warm, whatever the weather.

Solar Heating

Solar heating uses a similar heating unit to electric heating solutions, but instead of drawing its power from the mains, it is powered directly from solar panels fitted to your roof. They do take a bit of time to heat the pool, but they are exceptionally environmentally friendly and outside the initial purchase cost, have no long-term running costs.

Electric Heating

Electric pool heaters are a great alternative to solar heaters if you don’t have space or the option to fit solar panels. Electric heaters are moderately environmentally friendly and don’t cost much to run, but aren’t as cheap or friendly as solar; they do, however, heat the pool faster and more efficiently.

Gas Heating

Gas heating options are great for quickly heating your pool whatever the weather outside, but the trade-off is that they are expensive to run and have a significant environmental impact. Gas heating does make a good choice as a back-up heating option for the colder months while using a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option for the rest of the year.

Pool Cover Heating

Pool cover heating is by far the cheapest option to keep your pool warm. The only cost is the initial purchase of a solar pool cover, which includes a series of solar lenses that use the sun to keep the water warm. The downside is that a pool cover can’t warm the water as much as other methods and will only work if your pool isn’t in the shade. It also isn’t a great option for year-round heating, being primarily focused on summer heating.

How to Select the Best Heating System

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to heating your swimming pool—the best option for you might not be the best option for the pool next door. The main deciding factor in choosing the right heating option is how much you intend to use your pool, and therefore how often it will need to be heated. While other factors have an influence on how much your pool needs to be heated, e.g. local climate or position and orientation to the sun, knowing how often and quickly you want to heat your pool is the first question you should think about. Solar options, for example, are efficient and cheap to run, but if you intend to use your pool regularly, and with no planning, electric or gas might be a better option.
